EPROM Energy Saving Case Study
Scope of implementation
In accordance with ISO 50001:2011, EPROM Cairo office is implementing energy management system requirements, enabling to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption.
Based on monthly energy consumption analysis and energy efficiency analysis; it was found that the most energy consumers at Cairo office are air conditions, water heaters, PC and lighting respectively.
Data available monthly for two years 2016 and 2016, energy team chose year 2015 selected asbase period for comparison.
Stages of implementation
Energy team chooses significant energy sources to be Electricity then prepare two categories one for significant energy uses (SEUs) and the other for insignificant energy uses.
Based on the most energy review analysis there a group of the opportunities for improvements in the following areas as follow:
-
Lighting Blubs:
- The first energy project was to replace the incandescent and florescent light bulbs by LED light bulbs; bulbs had been installed in the second half of July 2016 which enabled us to reduce power consumed in lighting by 40% during the period from August to October 2016 at Cairo office.
-
Water Heaters and Hotplates:
- Provide alternative energy source (e.g. natural gas) to water heaters and cafeteria. This needs the replacement of electric water heater and hotplate with natural gas water heater and cooker.
- Already contacted the natural gas company to provide natural gas to Cairo office.
- Prepared energy operation control to reduce energy consumption at cafeteria and bathrooms till provide natural gas connections and replace water heater and hotplates.
-
Air Conditions:
- Conducting a regular preventive maintenance for all air conditions installed at Cairo office and regularly clean air filters.
- Prepared energy operation control to set out rules for operation and maintenance of the air conditions. This may help EPROM to save 5-10 % of energy consumed in air conditioning.
- Energy saving in Air conditions will be evaluated in the nearest opportunities after collecting the required data to avoid seasonal effect.
-
PCs:
- Prepare energy operation control to adapt user behaviour to contribute in energy saving at Cairo office.
- Adjust all PCs to work in a mood that will balance between energy saving and performance this will enable staff to perform their task effectively and save power at the same time.
Energy monthly consumption for 2015 and 2016:
- The total electrical energy consumption (from January to November) n the year 2015 is 24191 Kw, while the total electrical power consumption in the same period in 2016 is 19057 Kw.
-
A reduction of 21.21% in electrical energy consumption at Cairo office was obtained in the year 2016 compared to the year 2015 as a result of applying the following:
- Replacement of the incandescent and florescent light bulbs by LED light bulbs.
- Conducting a regular preventive maintenance for all air conditions installed at Cairo office and regularly clean air filters.
- Prepared energy operation control to set out rules for operation of Air conditions and PC’s.
- The following figure represent the monthly electrical energy consumption during the year 2015 and 2016
